Developing the piece “Road to Home” was a bit of a journey. I utilized photography from my travels combined with a reliance on my unconscious to aid in its design. Glancing through my myriad of photographs I could not decide which one I wanted to paint. Each of these captured instances in my history triggered an emotional response, leaving my mind racing with memories. Although wonderful, it had me staring at a blank canvas. Finally, I grabbed an image I knew I wanted to re-render and began the task of creating my beautiful home’s sunset. I started to map the scene, and while doing this, I was reminiscing about how long it had taken me to get back to my home. Images how each mile was difficult and exciting leading me back home, to a place of serenity.
Before I knew it, I was dividing the canvas in two. It dawned on me that I wanted to show part of that travel towards home. The second image needed to show a road, and be a different time of day. The idea of time was important because as you travel, time travels with you. I was cognitively aware of the images and the memories associated with them, but intuition guided me when I selected the final two displayed in this piece. The juxtaposition created a dialogue between two images, but by overlapping the two a unity formed. I believe the convergence of these separate experiences can supply more meaning than what a single image and its history alone can provide. I hope that the viewer will see that within the confines of one canvas there can lie a multitude of experiences that are separate, but together create a working unity.
