Cabeza Maya
Mixed Media in Resin
Artist Statement
Piece: Cabeza Maya (from the series: Mundo Maya) When I started working on the series Mundo Maya (Mayan world), I did it thinking on Carlos Fuentes- Latin America: At War with the Past. There, the Mexican writer argues that the role of Latin America in the arts world is “to restore some kind of tragic consciousness, to make the United States understand that memory counts” that there is history, and that it does not renew itself every 24 hours.- In this light, the piece Cabeza Maya (Mayan head) reflects my intention to honor Mexico’s Pre-Hispanic past while presenting it in a modern and aesthetically compelling manner. Inspired by amber fossils – an actual bug once accidentally fell into the resin in my studio and made me evoke those archaeological objects” I decided to create a seemingly original Mayan mask and then encapsulate it in resin. Intending to achieve the desperate task of preserving the man’s head from time corrosion while keeping it as a proof of that ancient culture, this piece grants everyone who takes a look at it the possibility of travelling both inside one’s self and into otherness.
