Artist Statement
This image was taken in western Norway in May 2015 as part of an ongoing series that explores the ideas of continuity and rediscovery following disruption and loss. I chose medium format black & white film and printed this archival pigment print as a negative. I was aware that I could have printed it as a positive and inverted it, and it would still have retained its beauty for me. This choice represents the subjective nature of all experience.
There has always been a “through line” in my life: direction, stability, and a clear sense of self. Events such as the loss of my parents, my childhood home, and a series of unexpected traumas, caused me to lose sight of my through line. In reality, the line was there all along, but it became broken into pieces and took on new forms. I learned that those segments now represent core values. This series is about my personal challenge to reassemble the segments of the “through line.”
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
