Artist Statement
My art is compulsive, with my emotions as the driving force. Therefore, unsurprisingly, my cancer has been a recurring theme. I was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when I was three years old and my treatment ended when I was five, so most of my memories are formed around stories that other people have told me. Making my scars and my feelings the only things that really remain for me.(Both of which are featured in this piece.) The scars are straightforward, caused by surgeries, but the feelings are not. I have always been aware that I was sick, but as I got older, my comprehension of what that meant changed. A child recognizes pain, but not the concept of life threatening illness. The majority of my cancer ‘experience’ has consisted of the ‘after.’
