Artist Statement
I am intrigued with humanity’s relationship to nature, primarily with our inability to confront and overpower our environment. This external struggle symbolically represents our own inner turmoil and submission to forces greater than ourselves. Out of Body aims to create an aesthetic experience in which the subject submits to the awe and deathly terror of nature. I was inspired largely by the use of sublimity in the seascapes of two early 19th century Romanticism painters, J.M.W. Turner and Caspar Freidrich. My underwater images have been compared aesthetically to Bill Viola’s “Five Angels for the Millennium”. While similar, my work has more of a focus on the internal turmoil of humanity; whereas, Viola-s focus is on transcendence.
I attempt to modernize sublimity by capturing the subject in an unconventional setting. I use the natural element of water as my backdrop, and I intensify the experience by integrating vast darkness, strong overhead lighting and visual abstractions. In Out of Body, I exhibit a floating perspective that captures the aftermath of a human’s failure to overcome submersion, signifying our surrender to the overwhelming dark battle within.
Lindsay Godin attended East Stroudsburg University where she graduated in 2014 Summa Cum Laude majoring in Art & Design with a minor in Media Communications (Photography Track). Following graduation, Lindsay applied and got accepted in 2014 into the Summer Residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. This was an exceptional experience where her photographic work was critiqued by nationally acclaimed photographers who encouraged her to continue her training with a MFA. This past year she applied to graduate schools, while continuing the development of her artistic skills by completing a Post-Bachelors Digital Photography Certificate at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Lindsay has had her work placed on permanent display at the Lehigh Center in Bethlehem, PA and the Chancellors Building in Harrisburg, PA. In fall, 2015 Lindsay will be attending the University of Iowa MFA program in Studio Arts, with a primary concentration in Photography, and a minor concentration in Graphic Arts. With her graduate teaching assistantship, she will be teaching digital photography for non-majors, and introduction to digital photography for BFA students.
