Unique Silver Gelatin Print
Artist Statement
My practice centers around a surrendering of control through the exploration of generative processes as a way to create art. By using simple machines to create exposures on gelatin silver paper, my work becomes an active collaboration between the process and myself. In many cases, the process itself makes the aesthetic and compositional decisions that make up the work. While these works are rooted in conceptual concerns, ranging from the idea of reproduction in the photographic process to the relationship between creator and machine-tool, they retain a strong formal edge as well, combining form and idea into a cohesive work that retains a strong aesthetic component.
Machine Based Artistic Production (MBAP) is a series of unique photomechanical drawings on large sheets of gelatin silver paper, produced by the movement of several light-mounted, self-propelled machines drawing their paths across the page. This work creates an illegible record; capturing a moment photographically without the mediation of the camera, tracing an event that I set in motion, questioning the nature of photographic reproduction.
