The idea to photograph sardines was inspired by the undeserved bad reputation they have in the United States. I wanted to create something commonly known as repulsive into something beautiful. The second I pulled back the tab, I saw the beauty in the small, oily, silver fish. I was captivated by the texture and organic lines seen on the skin. I felt a sense of order in the repetition of sardines packed neatly in two rows. I saw how the can became an extra element in my image and helped direct my viewer’s eyes to the subject.
Photography has strengthened my eyes to see small details. I am driven to look at subjects in a new perspective. Identifying beautiful light to enhance my subjects in monochrome is my favorite passion.
