Artist Statement
Using toys has been a primary subject matter in many of my themes, to indicate youth, children. Choosing doll’s, puppets, or toys as a subject matter has many meanings for me. Having never played with dolls before in my childhood it was liberating to collect and “play” with my new found objects. They also have an intense emotional bond with people; they just work symbolically for me.
The piece is about the human cost of war. Not only for our sons and daughters that don’t return home after their deployment, but also, the uncounted family members left emotionally destroyed from they’re loss. The human costs of war have been enormous.
The skull image is a silk screen I had done in school; I recently re-discovered it, which inspired me to make this piece. Made up of approximately 1400, 1- army men. Pointing at each other to reference we are killing ourselves as humans not race
