I Have Changed I Have Not Changed
When setting out to paint this portrait I wanted to convey 2 main ideas. One is that all things change. The second is that amidst change there is something unchanging. Although the outer form has changed the inner sense, the sense of being and existing, this has not changed. This portrait is about integration. To hold and acknowledge all that was, with all that is now.
On the surface of it this is a portrait of a Woman. At a deeper level it is a story of a personal journey and transformation, capturing the vulnerability of intimate personal struggle. My transition from Male to Female is probably the most difficult thing I have ever done on every level. It has challenged me physically, socially, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Yet at the same time I would have to say it is also the most heart opening, mind expanding, compassion inducing thing I have ever done aswell. Looking back over the last 10 years my thoughts and beliefs and understanding of the world have changed, but the fundamental sense of myself, that indescribable sense of, I am, That hasn’t changed at all.
