Jesus, Plug Me In
Jesus Plug Me In reflects on catholic upbringing. Are we expected to just plug into what is spoken, or can we experience it for ourselves. Catholic school lessons were taught as the final to all. No need to read or experience anything more, just listen to priest, He tells you all you need to know. This piece began with a discovery of a collection of electric parts and a fondness of rust. Rust reflecting on my age and the age of my religious lesson. I combine religious experiences, and found objects to create fresh collage assemblages that contrast my upbringing to create new ways of expression and insights.
Jesus, Plug Me In is a mixed media assemblage that uses inexpensive, everyday materials such as wood, polystyrene, plaster, and paper. But also includes a range of media to include paint, animal glue, rusted metal, found objects, resin, and collage. Artwork has water media paint with collage over it, or collage with water media paint over it. I begin by crafting a simple wood framework, spray paint several colors at once, allowing the paint to dry. Wood board is used in the backing of each collage, and this one is no different. Layers of cut and paste collage paper elements are assembled, glued down and varnished over. Toy parts, found objects, left over hobby train plastic pieces are painted gold and highlighted with rust.
