Artist Statement
This image takes inspiration from a series of papers published by Joshua Sanes’ and Jeff Lichtman’s groups at Harvard, who introduced a cell labeling method -Brainbow- that allows neuroscientists to extend traditional imaging techniques to a multitude of colors. Figures from the papers show Brainbow slices of rodent hippocampus, the brain area largely thought of as the substrate for memory.
As I continue to be influenced by microscopic images of brain cells and various neuroimaging techniques, my work has evolved to examine our literal interior landscapes. Intricate layers of textured, colorful paint reproduce cerebral kinetics. The ‘stuff of thought’ becomes visually thought-provoking as a serious scientific conversation finds recontextualization in paint and canvas.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
