Artist Statement
I didn’t set out to pick on McDonald’s; it just kinda happened that way. I’dbeen wanting to do something with food wrappers or food packaging for a while. Most of my art work is based on using re-purposed materials; cardboard, discarded cigarette packages or whatever I can scavenge that can be reused and made new again through art. The goal is to associate the found material with the images I create on them. I happened to find a large number of discarded McDonald’s food wrappers. These particular pieces are what I consider funerary art, which relates back to the title- “In loving Memory”. Funerary art in the vein of Cenotaphs or memorial pieces symbolically represent a dead body in an effort to celebrate a life or commemorate a large sacrifice by a group or individual.
In my piece, the wrapper is analogous to a body bag or death shroud for an animal that was murdered after a short violent life of suffering and imprisonment. I chose to illustrate the animal already represented on the wrapper as a symbol of the life taken by means of slaughter. These animals were living breathing creatures that were reduced to commodities and products. The ear tag attached to the frame and illustrated in the depiction of the animal are an homage and a relic of its former life. The imitation pig hide used to mount the pice is one more reminder of the animal as a living, breathing being.
Regardless of the consumer’s philosophical belief, I want to convey both a celebration of the sacrifice the creature made so we could live, as well as a memorial to a life that didn’t need to be taken. In the end, each sacrifice exemplifies a living creature that has been brutally, selfishly processed for humans to consume rather than a faceless numbered commodity.
