Oil Painting
Artist Statement
By taking advantage of oil paint’s great capability of rendering alternative realities, I use mellow colors and thin glaze to create realistic figures and spaces that evoke a sense of sinister. The references not only come from painters through out the history such as Vermeer, Lucian Freud and Peter Doig, but also from certain genres of cinema. While the paintings can be contextualized with historical and conceptual concerns, I want them to stay incomprehensible. The uncanny plays a significant part in my practice. In my paintings, the uncanny-ness is usually presented as an inbetween-ness: the frozen moment in between one second and the next, the locations between the known and the unknown, the objects that are lifeless yet seem human, the fetishized interiors that are realistic yet feel alien. The inbetween-ness turns familiarity into something that is unsettling and unfamiliar.
