A Door to the Rich Unknown
This piece is a hybrid of a photo of my daughter’s printer and some flowers in my garden called Cistus, native to the Mediterranean region and extremely popular in California, but very rare in the eastern US. This is a seminal example of the tension between the beauty of the machine and the beauty of nature, a door to an unknown aesthetic.
I have several artistic goals. First, I want to show that mathematical systems can produce richer images than typically characterize mathematical art. I try to create art that is as “painterly”? as possible. I use only classic elementary functions. I hybridize images that are seemingly incompatible, e.g. flowers and printers. I wish to produce images that are compellingly beautiful.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
