Questions Quilt and The Fortune Tellers
Encaustic provides the ability to layer my surface with multi media and create a spatial depth in its luminescence. It is an ancient form of art that is having a contemporary resurgence. A piece often begins with an object, a “pop” element of sorts. Here, I built the origami – like piece and then photographed it to be copied in carbon and transferred repetitiously into the surface. The “Fortune Tellers” enjoy popularity in generations past and present. They are graphic in composition and allude to the mystery that lies before us in youth. Anything could happen. As time goes on, through a series of, often arbitrary, choices our linear path is realized. This is life, good or bad, and the mystery lessens.
Quilts are a recurring motif in my work. This begins with a compositional attachment to the grid, and furthers recognizing the conceptual link to civilization’s development and then, more specifically, to textiles and the feminine voice. In this age-old format, patches are often sentimental and the piece as an entirety is commemorative. The painting memorializes a passed moment in time for some while celebrating its recurrence in others.
