Artist Statement
In the State of Jalisco, there is a small village just two and a half hours from Guadalajara named Temacapulin. The little pueblo contains roughly 200 houses that contain 600 residents. Its cobbled streets, two centuries of history and family stories, the hot spring spas and all its citizens are in danger of being submerged if the National Water Commission and the state government build the El Zapotillo Dam.
I started to paint my Family’s home village in effort of bringing awareness of the dangers of the Zapotillo Dam. I have painted over 40 pieces that capture the beauty of Temaca and its citizens. The villagers are fighting hard to save their town in any way they can. On every street and almost every wall around the town, you will see saying like “Temaca resist, we will not give up. Owners of property have created banners saying “This House is NOT for sale, this house will NOT be flooded, we will NOT relocate. Respect what is NOT yours. Leave us alone!”
On a summer afternoon walking with my wife who grew up in a neighboring village, we came across an old man walking down the street with the cliffs out in the background. It was a nostalgic moment for me. It took me back to my youth and reminded me of my grandfather. I quickly grabbed my sketch book and sketched it out. I make sketches when I come across landscapes that have vibrant colors and amazing foliage that later become pieces of art. The sketches are simple but the color and detail stay in my head for life. When I started this painting, it all came together very fast. The detail on every brick, the antique soda and beer signs, the plush clouds and the suns final light of the day perfectly transferred from mind to canvas. The warm colors can make the viewer feel like they are at home. Makes the viewer seem like if they have been there and that is what I try to make the viewer feel, like if they are at a familiar place. Thank you for taking the time to learn about where I am from and my message I try to get across to the world.
