The inspiration behind this piece is multifaceted. Having recently moved to a new area, themes of “home” have been pervasive in my artwork. However, my vision goes beyond that. The fish are swimming home, from the depths of the ocean, toward the light of the world. This represents both hope and search for greater meaning. Their path may be circuitous, but they still travel upwards.
The fish swimming “home” also maps out my own path of healing and recovery. I am self-taught and began creating collages after becoming severely ill. Thus began a long, arduous journey towards wellness, and, in turn, a new relationship with the world around me. As I started creating, I began to perceive much more depth to my experience than what was apparent on the surface.
This work was created using paper, acrylic and ink. I love the freedom of collage, which allows me to incorporate a great variety of materials. Constructing layers with diverse mediums allows me to create ethereal texture and patterns, combining elements of both realism and fantasy. Hopefully, this inspires the viewer to see the world with just a bit more curiosity and wonder.
