Artist Statement
In my artwork, I allow my intuition to guide me through the process. I let whatever happens happen and trynot to be too controlling. I also let the characteristics of the medium be part of my journey. The printing process I use is called Mokulito, which means “wood lithography” in Japanese. Unlike traditional lithography which uses a stone or aluminum plate, the plate in Mokulito is made of an organic substance: wood. The characteristics of the wood changes with each printing, so with each print there is that unexpected element.
My inspiration comes from many different artists, too many to name. But mostly from the spontaneity and energy found in Abstract Expressionism. I have also been inspired most recently by my trip to Barcelona where I worked for a week in a printing studio learning direct techniques, such as using a dremel (a kind of drill) to create marks on the plate. I create gestures and marks on the wood with a combination of brush strokes and the dremel. After processing the wood, I roll on the ink. The marks made with the brush attract the ink and where the wood is untouched it resists the ink. At this point I print. The combination of my expression and the unexpected characteristics of the Mokulito process come together to create something interesting and unique.
There is a looseness and energy in the print “Untitled”. After I put down the brush strokes and that dries, I freely draw into the wood with the dremel, creating incisions and marks that only a dremel can make. I printed in black to focus on the shapes and gestures, without the distraction of color. Also, black and white is honest and direct, which I like to think this piece is.
