Artist Statement
What is ethos? Ethos is a term with various meanings depending on the context in which it is used. With this in mind I explored the meaning of the term with regards to art. Ethos means ethical characteristics that arouses highly moral sentiments within works. The definition of this term brings such questions up for consideration, such as “What are ethical characteristics?”, “How could an artist express them?”, “How can observers feel them in a work?”.
As an artist who has been working with an interest in the human spirit, I try to find out answers to such things to be considered. The ethical characteristic of the human soul is love. Ethics are laws followed by people to respect all living things. Love is the characteristic that allows us to appreciate the world and all other beings beyond the ego. As a result, love allows ethics to be followed naturally. Observers can recognize when an artist produces work with true love; the authenticity of soul can be revealed regardless of medium.
In the two works of the same name, I depict love assuming the ethical characteristic of the noble soul. The model for these works is my friend who has faced a lot of suffering in his life. I wanted to understand and alleviate his suffering because I love him. While painting his eyes with a look of agony, I began to understand the depth of his suffering more and more. In portraying his closed eyes, I wanted to liberate him from his pain by visually placing him in a state of deep sleep to revitalize his energy. As the model of my picture, he could be comforted and relieved off his suffering by the fact that someone shows attention to his feeling. At the moment when the two works were completed, I realized that his eyes were not merely his individual eyes, but also became a universal one representative of souls in agony. In addition, the feeling of love within these works expressed by myself as an artist has been sublimated into a greater feeling which can be shared with all people who are willing to love.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
