Art Contests Accepted Artists
Los Angeles, California USA
The latest in the -Ephemera- series, this piece is an exploration and meditation on media – digital or otherwise – vying to assert meaning and relevance. This series focuses on the information of zeitgeist relentlessly spawned by society, laying claim to popularity and importance, and could be in the form of memes, cultural icons, news, or Twitter commentary.
Not so much concerned by the actual content of the pieces of information, I-m drawn to the tension and irony presented between them, and how they play off each other either visually or textually. This piece works with the collaging of several magazine covers, two of which present images of an adult female, ancient and contemporary: one, a National Geographic illustration of a woman stemming from the oldest archaeological finds of skeletal remains in America, the other, a People magazine cover of an Oscar-winning actress.
The images collected are broken apart digitally using Photoshop. Pieces of which are transferred to canvas or wood, then subject to scraping, chemical erasing, smearing, layering of more image fragments and paint. It has been a back and forth process where sometimes original images are completely lost and then partially revealed again. The use of paint, whether brushed or smeared, has added physicality to the experience melding and forging visual elements.
