Artist Statement
The animation Not to scale at all explores medical students’ drawings of the female reproductive system, employing the anatomical drawings created by 63 first-year medical students in the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.
It considers the drawings as part of a ritual of becoming a doctor, taboo-like topic related to sex, as well as self-portraits of the female students creating the images. The drawings are subsequently discussed with a medical doctor and an art historian, and these dialogues appear as a voice over of the animation.
The piece belongs to my postdoctoral research project “Representations of the Body in Medical Education”?, which explores the various ways the human body is visualized, simulated and discussed in the absence of an actual patient. It is an arts-based inquiry in which data collection and knowledge dissemination involve visual and performative methods.
