All of my flowers are completely frozen in blocks of ice. It started with an idea for a photograph. I was going to freeze an old Seiko watch in a block of ice and call it “Freezing Time”. As I was setting this up I noticed that I had a tall container so I decided to freeze a rose as well to see what would happen. As it turned out, the watch was just so-so, but the rose was somewhat interesting. I started to explore and freeze flowers. Over the past two years I have accumulated close to two thousands of these photos. The science behind the freezing is interesting. In fact, the freezing process is just as important as the photographing. As water cools from room temperature, the molecules begin to slow down making the liquid denser. At about 39 degrees it’s as dense as it’s going to get. At this point the organic material is “squeezed” causing any air or liquid to be pulled to the surface. From 39 degrees to freezing point, the properties reverse with the ice expanding. As it expands it drags the bubbles out forming the beautiful frozen bubble trails.
