Art Contests Accepted Artists
Los Angeles, California USA
‘Taxidermia’ is an homage of a time in my life when this very piece of cloth was both my chrysalis and wings, an ordained uniform. Frozen in time and framed behind glass, this piece of fabric serves as anthropological reference of my personal struggle as a young woman facing society, community, identity, and strength.
This moth on display, is one of a series constructed from different hijabs (Muslim head coverings). Each moth is displayed with a student ID of myself wearing that particular hijab during a specific time of my life. The wings are inscribed in Arabic calligraphy with the heavily debated verse from the Quran which allegedly prescribe the head covering for all Muslim women.
A moth was chosen to embody such a personal memento due to its regular representation in folklore for its use of lunar light to navigate through darkness. The moth, whom in her eternal search, is even willing to throw itself into the flame. In search of light.
