Artist Statement
The main theme of “Correspondentia” is duality. It is a concept that I have been exploring for most of my life, both the duality within myself, as well as the duality that can be observed in the world and, in this drawing, I incorporate all the elements mentioned in the following paragraphs to the main theme of the piece. I used black ink for “Correspondentia” as it creates a strong contrast that lends itself very well to the overall feeling I wanted to establish. I wanted to create a surreal atmosphere that conjures thoughts of parallel universes (physical, metaphysical and psychological) and invites you to get lost in the depth of the image and wonder what lies beyond.
Drawing and painting have always brought me a certain calm and peace of mind, while allowing inspiration to come to me naturally and organically. For many years, it was something I enjoyed in my spare time, and it wasn’t until about a year and a half ago, when I suffered a serious motorcycle accident, that my new life as an artist truly started. Being physically limited, I started drawing again to occupy my time and it almost became an obsession; I was spending up to 14 hours or more a day drawing. At first it was more of a therapeutic process for me, but as time went on, it quickly became a real rediscovered passion.
My work is largely inspired by the natural world and the mathematical ratios found in it, such as the Fibonacci sequence, as well as geometry. I like to believe that there is order in chaos, and therefore try to incorporate that element in all my works. I revel in the challenge of combining seemingly random and chaotic designs with the rigor of geometric forms, achieving, in the final work, a unique aesthetic harmony.
