Artist Statement
Pham An Hai was born in 1967 and belongs to a family of painters where his wife as well as his younger brother are also active artists. Pham An Hai has since long established himself as one of the leading artists in the field of abstract paintings in Vietnam. His works have a distinct style in terms of colors, form and composition. The paintings tend to display vibrant, or sometimes subdued, color schemes, powerful lines, and a rich surface texture. At one level, many of Pham An Hai’s paintings may be viewed as cityscapes or landscapes from his home city of Hanoi and its surroundings. We can discern houses, buildings and narrow lanes, and also imagine the city in various seasons or time of the day. Some paintings draw one-s attention to Hanoi in winter or it can be Hanoi in a red light stemming from the evening sun. Sometimes, there is a tranquil, romantic tinge to the works. At another level, his cityscapes may also reflect inner landscapes, landscapes of the soul and heart.
Pham An Hai’s abstract works convey a deeper meaning, as he has abandoned the natural appearance of things and increasingly constructs his art through a net consciousness and understanding of the surrounding world. Many paintings seem to have memories of tranquility, though other works feature more rapid and powerful strokes, as if something happened urgently. “I follow the mood of texture, through the tones of feelings obsessed by surrounding images. No matter what subject I follow, the texture is basically the nature of all my creations-, said Hai. “Many of my creations are based on daily life. The subjects of my art express and describe the beauty, the poetry, the romance and also the rural towns, the damaged culture and environment by migrations of people moving to cities from the countryside. The art sends a powerful message of the necessity to preserve the balance of our environment.
Recently the movement of feelings & visions has led me to express the broader culture and mankind. For example, the “culture” of drinking tea in my latest series – -Teapot-. When I say -the culture-, I am referring to more than the act of drinking a cup of tea. I am talking about intention and an understanding of the history of tea on society. This type of understanding comes through in art. Through the teapot, I am conveying the elegance of Asian culture, conversations over a cup of tea, and the graceful experience of getting to know one another. This is slowly disappearing, as life seems to be more urgent and fast-paced.”
