Perhaps more realistic in the traditional sense “Drowning In Emotions”, is a portrait in nature. As such, it is softened considerably through abstraction. There is an appreciation of the rhythm and separation of light and dark. To borrow the words of a recent curator’s review, this “establishes a complex figure-ground relationship.” It is more emotionally charged rather than existing as formal figure study. It is meant to drive you to a place deep within much like the subject of the piece appears beneath the depth of the water. The darkness of the water coupled with the question of whether she is rising or falling, creates a sense of insecurity amidst the obvious sense of the unknown. Yet her face thrives with vibrant color and intensity that could only represent self awareness and victory over adversity and conflict.
Through the use of organic soft pastels on natural canvas I have discovered a unique method of creating rich depth, vibrant hues, and distinct texture. This provides a visual experience for the viewer that prompts a certain receptive emotion and promotes storytelling. It’s easy to overlook the large role colors play in our daily lives. They influence our mood and decisions, they can attract or repel attention and we designate and organize things based on their hue. Art is therapeutic in so many ways and when we bring color to the forefront, life begins.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
