Artist Statement
In the painting Sandy Beach, I created a feeling of the beach touching the blue ocean and all the activity along the coastline and the red earth inland.
In my current work I’m using Oriental and Byzantine perspective. Oriental perspective gives you a view from above as if you are flying. Byzantine perspective comes from the Persian Court painters in India during the 1400s through the 1600s. Flying over the country and mostly my home state of California I find the diverse geology and man-made forms are a great source of inspiration. Rivers, farms, deserts, cities and roads interact. It’s so much fun turning all of this into abstract compositions seen from above.
In my book, “Journeys, The Art of Dinah Cross James”, I talk about my art and the story behind it. The book includes the story of the loss of my daughter and painting her as Raggedy Ann.
