Artist Statement
“Urban Scream” is a mixed media encaustic piece on canvas and board, 20” X 14”. Both images shown are photo transfers. As a background, I used a photograph from street photographer, Bree Akesson, taken in downtown Los Angeles, California. I used the image of the person pushing the shopping cart as a universal icon representing the colossal problem throughout our country of homelessness. The image in the foreground screaming, from photographer Philip Trager, to me represents the frustration of the entire situation. The setting could be any city, anywhere, U.S.A., or the world for that matter.
I chose the medium of encaustic, painting with molten, pigmented wax as it allows me to push back in space by actual density of material a particular part of the composition while accentuating other images, using less wax, making other parts more clear. The viscosity of this medium allows me to focus the viewer’s attention on the subject, the human condition, represented in the form of the unidentified man with the cart.
