Carnival No. 2
Encaustic Painting
Artist Statement
Objects have become an integral part of my work. For some pieces objects are incorporated directly into the work. In others structures are made that are not simple rectangular canvases or panels, but instead are constructed objects themselves. The works in Carnival Series use objects from games of chance and skill. The three paintings that comprise Carnival Series are painted in the hot wax of encaustic.
In Carnival Series I explore the paradox of the traveling carnival. A place where people look for entertainment, diversion, and excitement which may, at times, instead offer danger, fear, and uncertainty. The objects used are far from pristine, but used and even damaged and broken. Game pieces are arranged as they would be in a carnival game – arranged to ensure the games are difficult if not impossible to win. Bright colors are faded and worn. A faded image representing the dark side of the carnival dominates each panel.
