Artist Statement
Objects, often everyday ones, have been integral to much of my recent work. This grew from asking what meaning these everyday things hold for myself and for others. In the spatial/temporal series I combine multiple objects to suggest a perception different from what would normally be associated with them when viewed separately. As each piece is created, one object determines the shape and proportions for the wood structure, forcing the second to exist within a space not designed for it. Separate spaces for each emphasizes their differences. Color and texture are used to give each a context that both enhances each while contrasting with its counterpart. The viewer is left to make their own connections and evaluation.
Working in the hot wax of encaustic allows me to build up a broad range of textures, and create a luminance only possible with wax. The paint also acts as an adhesive, used to attach components to the wood ground. The history of encaustic paint is something I often reference in my work.
