Artist Statement
I was thinking of lighted buildings, and transit cars passing them at night. Duke Ellington’s music started playing in my head, and the painting got its name.
I am fascinated by the human tendency to grid everything, so many of my pieces are based on the grid or its deconstruction. Color is also very important and carefully chosen. This piece is a diptych, and is framed in a black wooden floater frame.
I drizzle a grid on the canvas with ink, paint the color segments that result, add splashes and paint peals as needed.
