The subject of time is often a reoccurring theme in my work. On a personal level I am worried about time. I set multiple alarms in the morning just to be sure that I do not miss the bus to work. I even have timed how long it takes my coffee maker to brew so I am sure that I can leave my apartment on time. However, in my work time is often misconstrued and even slowed to the point that we, as humans, cannot perceive its passing. Place and people are removed so that the image itself is a testament to the continuous passage of time.
Going back to basic, low-tech gear I am able to show the passing of time in a city that is hectic at best. “Ninety Day Sunrise, Bellevue, WA” was a result of ninety days of the sun rising over a hectic city. Ninety days of traffic jams, people driving to and from work, ninety days of love and hate, sadness and gratitude captured in a simple, low-tech image of the sun rising every day. By using a pinhole camera made by duct tape and an old 35 mm film canister, I am able to show how the sun continuously rises in a never ending arc over a hectic cityscape.
