Artist Statement
Jeanne Dentzel’s Abstract Floral series is an embodiment of the artist’s creative human spirit with each piece representing a loose, intuitive reaction to a simple idea. This idea was born out of a dream Dentzel had in which she recalls being told to paint a vase with flowers. Already working with abstract concepts, this moment of inspiration brought clarity to her work and helped introduce a concrete set of elements.
Bored by realistic reproductions of nature, Dentzel’s still-life’s are anything but still, instead occupied by frantic brush strokes and gritty textures. Recalling her days as a printmaking student, she employs some of these techniques within her paintings, pressing objects onto the surface, which create unique and spontaneous patterns within the work. This experimentation is a conscious decision in order to provoke elements of risk during the painting process, which keeps the activity unbound and unpredictable.
Although Dentzel has developed a very unique and personal style, her aim to keep the process visceral has lead to a body of work that feels fresh and continues to evolve.
