Artist Statement
In trying to pay tribute to the works of Vincent van Gogh my research led me to closely inspect many details in his paintings. “Sorrow” reflects his ability to capture the feelings of hopelessness, misery and pain.
The simple placing of hands over the face expresses so much. These emotions are held in his room, in Arles, as Death waits and watches. There is no escape. In the end the spirit of van Gogh sits in the black chair deep in sorrow. The walls of the room reference wallpaper that was found in many homes in the late 1800’s. These wallpapers are the background for some of van Gogh’s portraits.
This work was created for a group show called “Vincent”, curated by Shlomo Schwartz, a well know international Israeli artist.
