Artist Statement
Spruce Park Taxonomy was created during my artist residency in the Great Bear Wilderness of Northwestern Montana. For seven days I stayed in a U.S. Forest Service Cabin seven miles deep in the backcountry. This piece portrays the tools and objects I encountered from the cabin, stock shed and surrounding area. Also included are personal items used for art making and wilderness survival.
I have discovered that personal possessions often describe subjects more clearly than their physical appearance. “Tooling portraits” allow me to explore characters, locations and events simultaneously. The taxonomy photograph is essentially an individual Wunderkammer, or personal travel museum – a curated collection of precious things – tokens of experience from travel and exploration.
The medium of photography allows me to document the on-site event of taxonomical categorization. The print becomes a time capsule record of the curated occurrence. Mounting the image onto wood, and preserving it under a translucent layer of natural beeswax finalize documentation. The wood and wax support the image physically, and also reflect the subject of wilderness and nature.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
