Artist Ingrid Matthews Olson
Seattle, Washington USA
I spent the first part of my professional life as a musician. In playing music, I frequently feel as though I am moving through a landscape, a very particular place with its own unique soul; but the features that lend affect and meaning are not rocks, lakes or trees. I think of this work as a “landscape” in the same vein. I was looking for a dreamlike feeling of expansiveness and cheer, and a balance between groundedness and light. The underlying textural marks represent a frequent first step in my process: I forge ahead with them before I know how they will affect a finished work, and they become mysterious guides in its creation. In this case, I came to relate to them as spirits of the land.
As both an artist and musician, I am fascinated by color– by the way differing wave-lengths, whether of sound or of light, combine and interact to create feeling. I believe that the abstract use of color and form is capable of describing emotional energies with incisive precision; this is a deeply compelling idea for me. I take inspiration from music (rhythm, line, the layering that creates harmony) and from nature (light, water, land forms); from geometry, and from philosophical ideas (the mysteries of our purpose here). But the primary level upon which I engage with each painting, and hope that my audience will, is as a statement of feeling.
