Artist Statement
The Biblical story of Adam and Eve has provided an allegory that has, for thousands of years, allowed humanity to ponder some of the most compelling questions of life; questions concerning morality, sexuality and human purpose. Above all, however, it asks us to take on the great challenge of reconciling belief in spiritual presence with the undeniable reality of life in a very physical, material world. My way of resolving this challenge as an artist is to propose that the physical and the spiritual can be perceived as one in the same. To reach this perception, I attempt to take us to our biological essence.
In my piece entitled -Birth of Adam, Birth of Eve- I am describing our storied progenitors as fields of biological energy, rather than as human-like figures. I place the emphasis on the moment of creation rather than on the personae of Adam and Eve, thereby expressing the most profound part of this ancient story: the endowment of humanity with the power to create.
This piece is one of an ongoing series of drawings and paintings based on an epiphany I had when I saw, for the first time, a sonogram of my daughter in her Mother’s womb. The experience was so moving that it gave me a whole new sense of wonder and amazement with the energy and tenacity of life, propelling my creativity forward as nothing had before. The organic forms in both panels of this diptych are meant to suggest the same energy of ongoing growth and transformation that I witnessed on that day. The forms in the panel for Adam are intended to also suggest the human heart. Adam’s energy is that of the protector, thus the colors surrounding the forms are hot reds, oranges and yellows, suggesting passion. In the panel for Eve, the female aspects of her body intertwine with spiraling DNA, reminding us that woman creates life, the cool blues and greens suggesting the vast, pervasive power of ocean and sky and the steady life-affirming presence of Creation itself.
