Bud
Oil Painting
Artist Statement
This oil painting is an abstraction based on the idea of a plant budding. It has a lot of movement, giving it a feeling of exuberant pulsing growth.Rich texturing has been created with layers that have been painted, sanded down, and painted again.
The flow and physicality of the paint are qualities that are important to me, and I work in a gestural style, often using my hands directly on the canvas. This imparts a sensuous quality of touch to the work. The scale of the painting relates directly to the human body, as in the arc a hand might make across the expanse of canvas.
The intersection between the conscious and unconscious minds is the inspiration for this work. I allow the image to flow freely from the
unconscious, then I act upon it from the vantage point of the conscious mind. This movement back and forth allows the paintings to evolve in unexpected ways, creating a constant focus and imparting vitality.
