Fruit Study
Caran d’Ache
Artist Statement
This fruit study was a continuation of my exploration in color, executed through a vibrant still life. I gathered a selection of fruit that I felt had a good combination of colors and textures, which gave me multiple surfaces to play with. The lighting helped amplify the freshness of the fruit, giving off strong highlights. The blueberries were key in the piece to help direct the eye around the work, and juxtapose the bright colors of the other fruits in the image.
The work was drawn with Caran d’Ache, which is a water-soluble crayon. However, I decided against saturating the drawing with water. Although the piece is rich with many layers of color, they were all applied very delicately. Because the Bristol board used has a porous surface the crayon was unable to penetrate those areas, which created a slight stippling effect on the work.
