I grew up in St.Petersburg, Russia when it was still called Leningrad. The court yards in the center of the city were fascinating to an artist’s eye… however, created an incredible hardship for the inhabitants of the surrounding apartment buildings. The flats were always dark and damp since there were no lights coming through the windows… The yards were intertwining with one another and were connected by the arches that lead to yet another similar court yard… You could walk through several court yards before reaching the city’s street. There were lots of snow in the winter that didn’t melt till the Spring at times. The grey slush covered the court yards often through end of April… Occasional sun could not melt all the snow there… This painting is allowing you into the last glimpse of the winter in one of the city’s court yards… I used lots of dripping oil to create the impression of desperation, slowly melting snow and dampness…
