Human Conditions; It-s what drives almost all of my artwork. Whether it’s a painting of a tree, a portrait or most recently, hats. From my own perspective and ongoing observations, I am intrigued by the way people walk, talk, dress, or in the way they avoid, interact and engage. I refer to my personal perspective of the human condition as walking the line between individuality and conformity. Be what no one else but you can be, within your own little circle of the world.
In March of 2015 I began sketching a little series of drawings and jotting down notes with my human perspective in mind. The thoughts making their way to paper were to use hats as metphors or symbols or even people in general. Hats as thoughts, action statements, fashion or even hats as symbols. The idea was to build an entire art collection of hats as the focal point or star. I created over 30 pieces in 6 months. This particular piece, Pink Chapeau, was part of a study where the human element was so subtle it played second fiddle to the hat, without losing the identity and feminism of the figure. Also influences of 1980s graphic design played a role in the background shapes and possibly even color usage.
After years of experimenting with various styles, techniques and mediums in all forms of design and art, I stumbled on something that intrigued me; a blunder, an accident, a mess- That -mistake- revealed a beautiful artistic effect. Since then, I have been working to control the effect that solvent chemicals have on inks and dyes. I combine litho print techniques with chemical solvent washes, literally melting ink into paper. I then merge these multiple layers digitally into refined pieces of art. Each piece is then embellished with pastels, acrylics and other mediums depending on the look I am trying to achieve.
