Diego began as a portrait of a friend form Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was immediately inspired by his uniquely dramatic bone structure, and felt moved to express the reflection I witnessed within his eyes. During the process of creation, I began to sense a different voice emerging. This voice spoke to me of the pain and suffering of the Native Americans, while simultaneously sending me signals of strength and hope despite the obliteration of their way of life. Diego teaches me to embrace the experience of hardship to produce the pearls of strength that keep me moving forward, regardless of any situation I may find myself in.
Diego is an award winning art piece created during my first explorations into the medium of stained glass. After many years as a painter, I began to experiment with different techniques to integrate stained glass into my painting process. Diego’s portrait was first rendered in watercolors. Once the painting process was complete, I would intuitively hand cut and place stained glass over areas of Diego that would emphasize the feeling I was sensing. Once the entire piece was overlaid in stained glass, I filled it in with a colored grout that added to the movement and drama that this portrait exudes. This experimental technique also demonstrates the transition of my journey as a painter, into primarily focusing on stained glass as a medium.
