Artist Statement
Growing up in southern California, I often passed by old structures that featured sharp angles, geometric shapes, elongated curves, neon signs, and upsweft roofs. This outlandish style deviated from the homogeneous strip mall so much it caught my attention. I found out later on that the peculiar architectural form is called Googie, and originated here during the 1950s-60s Space Age. The characteristics of the buildings began to make sense as I could see the exaggerated influences of space exploration and technology from that era. Gradually, I noticed many of these establishments were being demolished or drastically altered. In an effort to document and help raise awareness of preserving these landmarks, I have embarked on shooting panoramas of Googie buildings. They are shown in their environments to exemplify how Googie, once representative of a generation optimistic about the future, is now mostly overlooked and forgotten in the present landscape.
