Still Life with Cherries, Oysters, and Hamsters
My current work is influenced by 17th Century Dutch painting. I am interested in the way the Dutch masters depicted various textures using pigment and oil to create an illusion of reality. Their handling of paint was incredible and it’s a skill I hold in high esteem. The pigments I use are historical. These include variations of lead white, genuine vermillion, lapis lazuli, lead tin yellow, and the traditional earth colors. Some colors such as lead tin yellow and lead white are capable of creating effects that modern pigments can not achieve.
I have included modern pets within my paintings to add humor and mystery to the 17th Century inspired compositions. In one of my paintings a pug wearing a millstone ruff refers to a veterinarian’s Elizabethan collar. Another painting features an unfriendly-looking rabbit, with a raspberry smeared around it’s mouth. It aggressively stares at the viewer as a dead hare hangs behind it. This contrasts with a bonsai tree representing tranquility. My painting of hamsters within a still life pays homage to the 17th Century Dutch masters and Youtube videos of hamsters eating miniature meals. The theme of the Youtube videos is somewhat absurd yet entertaining. I view my art in the same way engaging the viewer using seductively cute animals within a ludicrous theme.
