Magnifying glass in hand, I study my subject and then jump right in.Gong-bi means ‘meticulous” in Chinese. The Ancient Chinese told detailed stories by strategically placing brushstrokes and deep colors on a page. Using nature as my muse, I follow in their footsteps by repeating lines and contours to form shapes, values and contrast, all working together to transport the viewer.
Art Critic, Sawyer J. Lahr wrote, “The effect appears pencil drawn but has a living, breathing, sculpturesque dimension emphasized by the black backgrounds, creating a positive and negative space rarely seen in life surrounding floras.”
Scratchboards are hard boards covered in a layer of Porcelain Clay and then India Ink. Etching the ink makes the image appear in the clay. If I like, I can add colored inks at the end of the process. It takes a lot of courage to approach this medium since I neither sketch or erase. Unlike traditional etchings where prints are made, each one of these creations are an original piece of art.
