Many Levels
Acrylic Painting
Artist Statement
I started this painting with a plan: to layer colors, shapes, and types of paint to show how layering creates unexpected effects. I started as I always do by preparing the canvas with gesso; I applied the gesso heavily and swirled it with my palette knife to create surfaces for paint to catch on. Then I applied the paint as it came out of the tube with no particular story or image in mind. When my husband saw this first set of shapes, he feared this would be a failed painting — the shapes looked childish. This never bothers me, as I know that at the bottom of many layers, that kind of shape will take on different meanings. When the rest of the paint has been laid on, simple forms will suggest more than they did as solitaries.
The development of “Many Layers” consisted of just that, adding layers of colors and shapes, and finishing with a layer of metallic gold. I was recovering from surgery while working on “Many Layers” and was only able to paint for an hour at a time, a blessing for keeping this painting true to its concept of layers applied separately and kept separated from one another. My interest throughout was to see how the colors and shapes affected each other (say how a blue layer on top of an orange worked, especially if a second layer of orange was added). The end result allows viewers to see different imagery in the many surfaces because their eyes focus on different layers in the work.
