The children in “Hold On” were inspired by a vintage illustration of Eastern European peasant children. They evoke the world of old fairy tales, in which the innocent face deep dark woods and all that lies within. They drift, like us, subject to unknowable forces, holding on to one another for courage and support. This piece is a wish and a blessing for all those moving into the unknown.
“Hold On” is part of a series called “Gravity.” This is an exploration of levity and gravity, in both the emotional and the literal sense. In their black and white simplicity they evoke old pen-and-ink illustrations and vintage photographs. Like them, we are fragile, yet durable; we can choose to approach the unknown in fear, or with a light heart in openness to the adventure of it all.
Every object in this series is sculpted in porcelain, using tiny slabs and jewelry tools to add meticulous detail. Once they are bisque fired I add stains and diluted glazes to the surface, and fire them in an electric kiln. In the finished piece, the balloons are fixed to the wall and the figure is suspended from them with thread-wrapped wire.
