In general my work revolves around the female body and the violence that it is subjected to in the media and pop culture. The media teaches us to shame and edit the female form. It also gives us an “ideal” to compare women to. The process in which female bodies are edited or rearranged in media is violent both mentally and physically and affects how we view and treat women everyday. My work focuses in on the violence of the body editing process where we arrange fat into socially acceptable locations on the body.
Bathory Business focuses on the competitive body shaming between woman. Elizabeth Bathory was a noble woman that was afraid to lose her youth and believed that bathing in the blood of young female servants restored her beauty. The idea that she was willing to brutally torture and destroy another woman in order to maintain a beauty standard, I think, is an apt example to illustrate how extreme the mental and physical pressure on the female body is both in Lady Bathory’s time and ours. Women degrade one another to perform for the male gaze.
I chose the color palette based off of Elizabeth Bathory. She liked to wear crimson and pearls. The background of my painting is pearl white. The ornamental halo is derived from Turkish ornament, which matches Bathory’s geographical origin. The corset and other pinching and restricting elements are gold-leaf rendered with oil paint.
