Lamp Form 5
Evolving through metaphor, my flesh forms are the product of a culture obsessed with violently re-organizing the female body to obtain the “ideal”? beauty: who has the power in this process? What is feminine? What is masculine? Can we have characteristics of both? I boil it down to an arrangement of fat. In one area of the body fat is considered beautiful and feminine (breasts, hips, butt) in other areas it is considered grotesque (chin, belly, arms) these are the standards imposed on the female body. I create powerful feminine forms and venerate them with monumental proportion.
Lamp Form 5 is the first in this body of work to incorporate references to the “reclining nude” This appears visually in the velvety red background and the fleshy colors of the “lamps” skin. This is also the first body in this series of work to gain the attractive fishnet to adorn the body as opposed to a simple ornamental pattern. The red on the back end of the metal feet references LouBoutin’s red backed shoes.
Being number five in this series, this was the first of these images to receive a background other than the natural white of the paper. The background is done in acrylic and the body painted in watercolor. The metallic areas are rendered in black marker, and covered in an acrylic wash. The netting is done in micron pen.
