Artist Statement
I draw my inspiration from found materials and try to use them in a way that is either interesting to me or may inspire the viewer to see the item in a new or unusual way. I attempt to tie the images I create with the former intended purpose of the material. In this case, I am using Marlboro cigarette packages to play with the concept of gender; specifically masculinity.
I remember the print ads for Marlboro cigarettes and the Marlboro Man from my childhood. The Marlboro Man defined what it was to be a traditional man. I’m attempting to subvert the Sturdy Oak or John Wayne model of traditional American masculinity that those ads conjured up. By rendering the image in a homoerotic pinup style I hope to engage the viewer in a discourse about gender.
